The short explanation of the importance of the Tradition is that a large group of concerned citizens and a lot of Vets, especially Vietnam Vets, did not want the young kids in today’s Military to go through the ordeal of the late 60′s and early 70′s. The Red Shirt Friday Tradition is not political in any way, nor does it show a support for or against the Global War on Terror. Since September 11, 2011, there have been well over five million young guys and gals to step up and decide to join the Military in defense of that cowardly act against their country. None were drafted nor was there even the remotest chance of them being drafted. Deb and I had two boys who probably made the statement that was heard by many Moms, Dads. Husbands, Wives and Kids, “We just want to do something”. Deb and I can still hear those words ringing in our ears as we are sure many others do. They wanted to serve their country in a time of great need and they did.

Our two boys loved the idea that Mom and Dad jumped on the Tradition as soon as we heard about it. Why? Just like those other heroes, they wanted to know for sure if we appreciated what they were doing. We told them every time we talked to them face to face, on the phone, in skype and any other place, that They are Heroes, We Respected them, Admired them, and totally appreciated the sacrifice that they were making in defense of their country. Some times it is not easy finding the right words, so Just Wearing a Red Shirt on Friday speaks volumes. An overwhelming majority of them know what those Red Shirts on Friday mean and they appreciate that gesture. Deb and I have worn Red Shirts on Friday since we discovered the Tradition in 2005. Yes we have been called the bobsy twins many times but more importantly it gave us a chance to describe the Tradition to one more person that had not heard of it. These guys and gals deserve our appreciation and support so much and when you pass one of the young guys and gals in uniform, just tell them Thank You!

The Burgess Family sincerely hopes with all of our hearts that you help us spread the simple but most important tradition far and wide and not just in the United States, but Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and countless other Allied Countries across the globe that rose up on our defense after 911.

Red Shirt Friday Kaufman Texas Veterans Memorial Park Ken and Patsy

American Heroes

What a great American couple. Ken and Patsy both are retired Master Sergeants in the United States Air Force.

Ken and Patsy currently live in San Antonio, Texas and the members of VFW Post 4376 were honored to have them for a few days in the Cedar Creek Lake area of Texas.

We were all pleasantly please to see the patriotism of this great couple. As we learned, Ken is a Korean War Vet and Patsy served during the Vietnam War.

VFW Post 4376 and the Red Shirt Friday Tradition is honored to have such examples as Ken and Patsy to look to and look up to.

In the picture to the left is Sid and his lovely wife Mary.

Both are very actively involved in the VFW and all Veteran Affairs in the Cedar Creek Lake Area of Texas.

Sid was elected as the Post Commander of 4376 in July of 2011, Mary is also very actively involved in the Ladies Auxiliary and are two of the first first people that

Deb and I met upon moving our membership to 4376 in the summer of 2011. Sid has quiet a story as a Marine in Vietnam in the early days of our involvement there

in 1963. The video below is Sid’s story in his own words!

It was a very touching and inspirational day at the Memorial Park in Kaufman, Texas.

In the video you will meet Ken Payne, a retired Master Sargent in the United States Air Force, Patsy j Payne, also retired Master Sargent of the United States Air Force both visiting

the Cedar Creek Lake area from San Antonio, Texas. Sid McIntosh, the Commander of VFW Post 4376, a United States Marine and also awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in

combat in Vietnam along with his lovely wife Mary McIntosh, one of the movers and shakers of the Ladies Auxiliary of Post 4376. My Darling Deb Burgess, also one of the movers and shakers of the

Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 4376 and my self, Sam Burgess. The wind was blowing a little so there is a little wind noise but the message came across very well about the

 VFW Post 4376 Celebrates Veterans Day, 2011!

Veterans Day of 2011, The VFW and The Ladies Auxiliary

This Veterans Day started at 06:30 with a radio interview by Radio Station KCKL/KLVQ in Malakoff, Texas. Commander Sid McIntosh, Service Officer Ron Whitley and Judge Advocate Sam Burgess were invited to do a radio interview.

Our sincere thanks and appreciation to Ronn Ricks and the staff of KCKL for playing this Veterans Day Tribute All Day!

We were next invited to visit the Tool, TX Elementary School for a Veterans Day Salute and Tribute.

Along with the Ladies Auxiliary, we spent most of the morning with the kids of Tool Elementary School. We were all thinking that we would be there as a service to the kids and teachers but

did they turn the tables on us. Veterans from all around the area were invited to participate in the Veterans Day Salute. The VFW Members in attendance along with Lynn Hill, Ladies Auxiliary President, Mary McIntosh,

Debbie Burgess and Sheila Jackson, we were all pleasantly surprised as we went from class to class and met and greeted the kids and teachers. We all answered questions from eager students and teachers and we all came away

with the understand that the kids and teachers of Tool Elementary School were very patriotic and very anxious to let all the Veterans and Ladies know it. Tool Elementary School, Teachers and Staff,

we salute you. Your patriotism and support of Veterans is noted and is a tribute to you all.

As our time was beginning to wrap up, we were given a very special American Flag which was hand made and signed by all the students and the Staff of Tool Elementary School!

Next on the agenda for the November 2011 Veterans Day was the Kemp Care Center in Kemp, Texas.

There are a lot of Veterans at this facility and a call from Terry Webb was all it took for the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary to take a tour of the facility!

A very special thanks to Terri and Lynn Hill, the President of the Ladies Auxiliary!

Veterans Day, November 11, 2011 was a very busy and phenomenal day for VFW Post 4376 and Ladies Auxiliary.

It was a day the we will always cherish and remember with great humility and appreciation.
