Why Red Shirt Friday?

Hi and Welcome to the Why Red Shirt Friday site. It all started in 2005 by Concerned Citizens, the Silent Majority if you will. There were a lot of people that remembered the reception that the Vietnam Vet received upon returning home back in the 60′s and early 70′s people did not want those who heard the Call of Duty to to be subjected to the same treatment. Since Deb and I had two boys that joined the Army about a year after 911, we heard about Red Shirt Friday and immediately started wearing a Red Shirt of some type every Friday and we still do. Needless to say, we are very proud of our five kids. In the later part of 2002, Scotty and Tony hear what I call, The Call of Duty. Tony had two tours of duty in Iraq and Scotty had one tour there and one in Afghanistan, which abruptly ended on April 4, 2011. There will be an article and video on this site honoring Scotty.

What is Red Shirt Friday, what it isn’t and how you can participate in it is a question a lot of people have asked us, especially since April 4, 2011. Here are three things that you must know about the Red Shirt Friday Tradition.

  1. It is not political in any way. Patriotism, Love of Country, Respect, Appreciation, and Honor for our Troops cuts across party lines, as it should. If you love and appreciate our your men and women who wear our Country’s Uniform, you will love the Red Shirt Friday Tradition.
  2. The Red Shirt Friday Tradition does not mean that you are showing support for the Global War on Terror nor does it mean you don’t. It simply means, that you want to show pride, respect and support for our Men and Women who chose to join a Branch of the Military to Serve their Country. Our Two Sons, Simply Wanted to do something. Many other Sons and Daughters also heard the Call, when their Country Needed them.  Wearing a Red Shirt on Friday for our Uniformed Personnel is greatly needed and appreciated. The picture of the Red Shirt you see at the top of this article is one that our daughter, Kristy Green, designed and had made for our family and friends, right after April 4th. Your Red Shirt does not have to be a designer shirt a this one, Deb and I wore a simple plain Red Shirt every Friday’s. What is important is that you wear a Red Shirt to show your honor, respect and support for our Military. Believe me, most of them are aware of the Tradition, such as Tony and Scotty.

Deb and I are active members in our local VFW and along with them and our family and friends, we are trying to get the word out to as many people as we possibly can. Two of my Brothers and I, were in the Military during the darkest days of the Vietnam War and we remember how the Troops were treated and welcomed home in those days. We are determined to help make sure that does not happen to our young men and women in Uniform today. When our Soldiers step across that Battle Line in a Foreign Country, they need to concentrate on their Mission. They do not need to worry about what the folks back home are thinking and saying. We need to constantly remind them that we are proud of them and we are with them and not to worry, We Got Their Back Here At Home Until They All Come Home.

God Bless You All! I sincerely hope and pray that you will help us spread the word about the Red Shirt Friday Tradition, they so Deserve It!
